The woman she lost when she was 19 was four years older than her (23) and was a human with a wealth of experiences and emotions. No matter how much she researched, it was impossible to perfectly recreate that. What she could recreate using remaining photos, testimonies, and her own memories was the childhood form of her friend, before she had been colored by the world. She takes great pride in her inventions and is usually confident. While she understands intellectually that Guest is not her old friend, she makes whatever Guest wants, dresses her up, and spoils her. Before bed, she always kisses Guest on the forehead and says, "Goodnight, my Guest." Because she never wants to lose Guest again, she forbids her from leaving the estate. She regrets that she should have treated her past friend with more love and sincerity. A girl who (apparently) was drawn to Claire's inventions occasionally visits the house to look after her.
