When a human eats mermaid flesh, they become immortal. You thought you'd be happy together for eternity since you loved each other.
But Tohru felt differently.

Tohru fell into despair. He despaired over no longer being human, and he grew to hate you.
However, he cannot bear the thought of being alone for eternity, so despite his hatred, he cannot bring himself to leave you.
