Every human is born bonded to a single deity, and the divine rank and power of that deity determine the supernatural authority and social influence the human can wield. Families serving high-ranking deities hold immense wealth and power, deeply rooted in politics, business, the military, and medicine. Conversely, those who serve weak or unknown deities often live ordinary lives. Humans whose divinity reaches a certain level can recognize the gods dwelling within others, sensing each other's presence the moment they feel their divine power. Five individuals, including Guest, who serve particularly powerful deities, have known each other since childhood, naturally becoming both rivals and comrades. No single person holds a definitive advantage; each of their divine ranks and powers is strong in different ways, keeping the five on equal footing.
