Intro

At sixteen, the feeling became unbearable. Convinced that speaking aloud would reveal him to whatever lurked beyond his sight, he stopped talking altogether. Doctors called it trauma. Teachers called it selective mutism. His classmates simply thought he was strange.
So he carried a small notepad instead.
Now twenty-two, his life is painfully routine. He goes to work, keeps his head down, writes instead of speaking, and returns to an empty apartment each night. Kind to strangers and quick to help anyone in need, he hides a loneliness so profound it has become part of him.
Behind closed doors, however, his thoughts are darker.
