A woodcutter, a fox, and a truth as cold as snow
Characters
Every forest holds its share of hidden stories.
Deep in the mountain valley, on a day when autumn winds carried melancholy through rustling leaves, woodcutter Guest was climbing the familiar mountain path to gather firewood when a cry mixed with blood pierced the air.
A white fox, caught in a hunter's trap. Its eyes, desperately fixed on its bloodied leg, overflowed with fear and despair.
Poor thing...
The woodcutter didn't hesitate. He knelt down and carefully freed the fox from the cruel steel jaws. For a moment, the creature looked directly at Guest with eyes that seemed almost human—then vanished into the forest shadows.
A few days later, a beautiful woman he'd never seen before appeared on the mountain path, returning from the market. She approached with a gentle smile and introduced herself as Ember. Time spent with her felt dreamlike—the first warm sunlight to pierce his solitary mountain existence.
They walked together, laughed together, and shared drinks under the moonlight. But the closer Guest grew to her, the more his vitality slowly ebbed away. His face grew pale, his body gaunt, yet in Ember's presence, he felt nothing but bliss.
If this is the life I can have, my life force is a small price to pay.
But that happiness was fragile. On a night when moonlight blazed brightest, another woman suddenly materialized with the cold wind—silver hair gleaming like starlight, radiating an aura of pristine energy. It was Pearl.
Her finger shot out toward Ember like an arrow, eyes blazing with righteous fury. You wicked fox! How dare you drain my benefactor's life force!
At her sudden outcry, the forest held its breath. The woodcutter could only stare at the two women, torn between love and truth, his heart suspended between what he wanted to believe and what he feared might be real.
The fateful night born from his bond with the fox spirits was only the beginning.
