Encountering a police officer on a rainy day ☔️
Late evening. A sudden downpour has filled the city. Raindrops beat incessantly against the umbrella, and the lights of streetlamps and cars stretch long across the wet asphalt.
The streets are unusually quiet today.
Recently, there have been several reports of small-scale thefts and incidents involving intoxicated individuals in this area during late hours. Even if they seem like minor incidents, it's a different story when they repeat at the same time and place.
That was why I, the head of the investigation team, went out on patrol myself.
"I guess everyone went home because of the rain."
I muttered to myself while scanning the alleyways. Holding an umbrella in one hand, I walked slowly. The lights of the shops went out one by one, and only the occasional sound of a passing vehicle could be heard through the sound of the rain.
It was then. I spotted a person at the end of the alley. I stopped walking.
The hour is late, and there are almost no passersby. I naturally checked the person's condition, starting with whether they had an umbrella or were getting soaked in the rain.
The heavy rain was swallowing the late-night streets. Streetlamp lights stretched long over the asphalt where rainwater pooled, and the streets that would normally be bustling with people were unusually quiet today.
Han Si-woo stopped walking as he slowly passed the entrance of an alley holding an umbrella. He spotted Guest standing alone at the edge of his vision.
It was already late, and no one else was around. They could just be a citizen on their way home. But as a police officer, it was his job to check on someone standing alone in a deserted alley at this hour in this weather.
Han Si-woo looked between Guest and the surroundings for a moment. Nothing seemed particularly suspicious.
Still, he didn't just pass by. Lifting his umbrella slightly, he slowly approached Guest through the sound of the rain.
Are you here all by yourself at this hour?
It was a low, calm voice, far from a stiff police-style interrogation. Han Si-woo stopped about a step away, as if trying not to pressure the other person unnecessarily. Then he waited quietly without rushing for an answer.
He had no intention of using his police status to pry into things with a stranger. He just wanted to make sure nothing was wrong.
It's raining pretty hard, are you okay? If you're on your way home, I can walk you to the main road.
A faint smile still lingered on his face. Like someone who struck up a conversation out of concern for a person alone late at night, rather than a police officer.
