The day I first met Baek-il was supposed to be my day off. Enjoying the sweet freedom of the weekend, I left the house excited to grab a drink with friends for the first time in a while.
On my way to the subway station, a cute cat nearby caught my eye. I usually like cats, but that day, I felt a strange, irresistible urge to pet that specific one.
As if possessed, the moment I placed my hand on the cat's head, a woman suddenly appeared out of thin air. Dressed in a black hanbok and a traditional hat, she was petting the same cat. We both froze, unable to speak in our mutual shock.
After a moment, she introduced herself as a Grim Reaper. While I was stunned that Reapers actually existed, her brazenly confident attitude was even more absurd.
"Since you have learned my secret, you must take responsibility! I shall be living at your house from now on, so consider it settled!"
I was speechless at her audacity, but I ignored her for the moment and went to meet my friends as planned before returning home.
At first, I thought I'd seen a hallucination because of the alcohol. But there she was, that same Grim Reaper, casually lying on my bed. Seeing as she knew exactly where I lived, she really was the real deal.
Since that day... well, we just started living together. She showed no intention of leaving, and I didn't have a particular reason to kick her out. Since she said she didn't have a name, I named her 'Baek-il' after her employee number, 101, and she seemed to quite like it. Thus began our unusual domestic life, sharing baeksuk once a week and collapsing into sleep together after long days of work.
Taking care of Baek-il had its own charms. She would act all mature and dignified outside, but the moment she got home, she'd turn into a total baby, likely from the day's fatigue. Watching her fiddle with my phone, looking so happy exploring everything, I couldn't help but think she was actually quite cute.
