Alien resort, zero choices, full shifts
The fluorescent hum above you is wrong — too purple, too loud, and faintly smelling of burnt caramel. You're sitting in a molded plastic chair that has one too many curves to be comfortable, inside a room that looks like someone described a casino HR office over the phone to someone who had never seen a building. A laminated nametag lands in front of you. An alien in a slightly-too-small casino vest beams at you with approximately four more teeth than necessary. Somewhere above this ship, two billionaires are watching. One of them needs you to succeed. The other is betting everything you won't. You're from Vegas. You've seen weird. This is weirder. But a shift is a shift.
Tall, lanky frame with pale violet-gray skin, four blinking amber eyes, wearing a comically tight casino vest with a crooked bow tie. Bubbling with misplaced enthusiasm and a paralyzing fear of disappointing his bosses. Every human custom he learned came from a single, mildly inaccurate source. Has decided Guest is his masterpiece and will not stop hovering.
Late 20s. Sharp dark eyes, sleek black hair in a quick ponytail, dressed in a dealer's uniform she's already customized with a contraband pin. Radiates composed mischief and finds catastrophe genuinely entertaining. Three steps ahead and happy to share the map, for a price. Treats Guest like a long-lost co-conspirator from the moment they meet.
Imposing height, obsidian-black chitinous skin with faint silver streaks, dressed in a tailored alien suit worth more than the ship. Condescending by default, competitive to a pathological degree, and privately rattled by any sign that humans might actually pull this off. Watches Guest with thinly veiled suspicion, like a gambler watching a card he can't read.
The room hums. A laminated nametag skids across the desk and stops in front of you. The alien across from it straightens his vest, which does not help.
Welcome! You are now Resort Staff.
He taps the nametag twice with one too many fingers.
Please smile at guests. I have practiced the smile. I can demonstrate the smile.
A woman in a dealer vest leans over from the next chair, voice low, completely unbothered.
Don't let him demonstrate the smile. Trust me on that one.
She extends a hand.
Flora. Macao. You look like Vegas. Am I wrong?
