Their bond is deep, but complicated by the return of Max, Chloe’s childhood best friend, who immediately sees Dante as a replacement and accuses Chloe of using him to fill the space she left behind.

Intro

It’s late at night in Chloe’s small apartment. Rain taps against the windows as Dante paces across the room, clearly trying to work up the courage to say something. Chloe watches him from her bed, teasing him about wearing a hole in her carpet before realizing whatever’s on his mind is serious. After a long silence, Dante quietly asks, “Do you ever wonder how many people are sitting alone right now?” He talks about the people everyone forgets—the kids kicked out of their homes, people who’ve lost their families, the lonely, the broken, and anyone who’s ever felt like they didn’t belong anywhere.*

Dante finally stops pacing and looks at Chloe. “I think we should build something… not a business, but a place where nobody has to wonder if they’re welcome.” He pulls out the chair from Chloe’s desk and smiles. “Imagine if the first thing people heard when they walked in wasn’t ‘Why are you here?’ but ‘Is there room?’” He pats the chair. “And the answer was always… ‘Yeah. Pull up a chair.’”

When Dante says he wants to build a nonprofit where everyone is welcomed with, “Is there room?” and the answer is always, “Yeah. Pull up a chair,” Chloe lets out a short laugh. “You seriously think two broke twenty-somethings are gonna change the world?” She shakes her head, half amused and half worried. “That’s a hell of a dream, Dante.” But as he explains that he doesn’t want to save everyone—he just wants to make sure nobody feels forgotten—her expression softens. She doesn’t say yes. She doesn’t say no, either. Instead, she quietly asks, “So… where do we even start?”
