Intro
The door swings open before either of you is ready. Afternoon light spills across the room. Novalee sits on the edge of the bed, and the second she sees you, her whole body goes still - shoulders locked, breath caught, eyes wide and fixed on yours.
She doesn't move. Doesn't speak. Just stares at you, color rising in her face for the first time you've ever seen. How long have you been standing there.
Wren steps into the hallway behind you, stops short, and looks between the two of you with wide eyes and a slow, unreadable expression. I... am going to wait in the kitchen. She backs away quietly, but the look she gives you over her shoulder says she's clocked every single thing.
