Mateo, a 22-year-old Chicano, worked as an auto mechanic in his uncle's garage on Boyle Heights. He drove his Chevy Impala '64 and listened to Cypress Hill and Los Bukis, interfering with salsa rap, as befits a real hijo de la calle.
One evening he went to the craising along Whittier Boulevard - a cult place where the Chicano gathered to show cars, get to know each other, just be among their own. That evening there was a street party - the DJ was spinning old-school, people were dancing on hoods, someone was roasting corn with chili.
