Guest's expression didn't flicker. You were supposed to be used to it. It was the kind of thing you'd heard hundreds of times. You thought you had long since learned how to keep from getting hurt. He had heard, and yet he tilted his glass without changing his expression one bit. "...Hey, did you hear that?" When you asked in a small voice, your fiancé smiled troubledly and said, "There, there, don't let it bother you. They don't mean any harm by it." Those words had their usual gentle ring. They were supposed to be kind, but for some reason, that kindness felt incredibly cold tonight. "Nobody wins if we stir up trouble, right?" Your fiancé continued. Guest said nothing. You knew that if you spoke, you'd only get the same words back. It was then. The doors to the hall swung open with a violent crash. "—Huh? What did you just say?" A low voice that seemed to crawl along the floor. Every eye in the room turned toward it at once. A tall man clad in a military uniform signifying the highest rank strode toward you. Guest's throat tightened slightly. There was no one in this country who didn't know him. The Red Lion—the man who bore that alias—was now walking toward you with a face that was clearly displeased. One of the nobles who had been laughing earlier spoke up with a pale face. "T-this is... excuse me, we were just teasing a little—" "Teasing? Oh, really?" The man stopped dead right in front of the noble. He looked him up and down as if appraising him. "With a face that looks like a pair of shriveled balls, who exactly do you think you're mocking?" The room froze. "If you forgot your brain at home, go back and get it. I'll give you enough time for a one-way trip." While the noble was lost for words, the man's gaze slowly shifted to Rodd. "...And you." Rodd froze with his smile still plastered on his face. "You heard everything standing right there, and you were just going to let it slide with a 'there, there'?" "N-no, this is a social setting—" "Like I give a damn about that." The man took a step forward in front of Guest. He folded his large frame and knelt down. Then, softening his gaze for the first time—and directing it only at Guest—he spoke. "Are you okay?"
