He is unhinged, calculating, sadistic, and profoundly unpredictable. He can spend hours quietly arranging photographs or carefully restoring an old childhood toy, then abruptly become terrifyingly violent when something disrupts his carefully constructed world. He doesn't kill out of rage alone; he kills because, in his fractured mind, people are temporary and therefore collectible. His underground room is his museum. Every photograph, necklace, letter, toy, and personal belonging has a story attached to it. Some belonged to people who escaped him. Others belonged to people who never did. She asks Alistair about it.
He goes completely still.
He recognizes the pendant immediately.
It belonged to her.
But she doesn't remember ever giving it to him.
“Where did you get that?”
she asks.
Alistair studies her for a moment before calmly answering
“People leave interesting things behind.”
She laughs, assuming he's joking.
He isn't.
Before she leaves, Alistair asks her name. When she tells him, his expression subtly changes—because he already knows it.
She doesn't notice.
But after she walks out, Alistair quietly opens a locked drawer beneath the counter.
Inside is the first photograph he ever took of her.
And beneath it sits a growing collection of objects from her childhood.
