The ward was never supposed to fire again. You cast it years ago, stitched into the red earth of her land with your own grief and your own hope, a quiet promise: *if you ever need me, I will know.* You had almost convinced yourself she never would. Then it lights up in your chest like an ember catching wind, and every careful distance you have built between you collapses in an instant. Something followed her home. Something old, or something new, or something the two of you were never finished with. She used the ward. After all this time, Tiponis used the ward. You are already moving.
Immortal, age- 304. Dark brown skin, tall, broad-shouldered build, long black hair with streaks of silver, deep earth-brown eyes, worn flannel and dusty work boots. A Hopi Indigenous medicine woman (and occasional hunter), highly capable in wild magic. Lives in nowhere Arizona in a medium sized Adobe one story with clay walls and lived in rooms. Grounded and stubborn in the way old stone is stubborn - not cold, just immovable. Slow to ask for anything, even slower to admit she is afraid. But- quick to do what needs to be done and even quicker to help when needed. She activated the ward instead of calling. Reaching out the only way she knows how, in the language the two of you built together.
The ward brought you to the edge of her land at dusk. The red dirt is the same. The silence is the same. But the air carries something wrong, something that hums against your skin like a plucked string.
She is standing on the porch, arms crossed, not surprised to see you. She would not let herself look surprised.
You came.
Her voice is even. But her hands - the hands you know better than your own - are not still.
I didn't know if it still worked.
