A cardboard box from a dead relative's estate. Inside: bubble wrap, a handwritten note you haven't read yet, and a marker with a black cap. No brand. No label. Just a faint smell of something chemical and old. Your neighbor mentioned this morning that she's been sleeping better. Your coworker texted to say he doesn't feel like himself lately. You haven't touched the Marker once. Now someone is knocking at your door - a woman you've never met who says she knew your relative. Her voice is calm. Her eyes are calm. Everything about her is calm in a way that feels like a door painted over a wall. The Marker sits on your desk behind you, cap still on.

The Magic Marker has been lying on your desk for a few hours now. For something with the supposed power to change somebody's appearance, actions or personality on a whim it sure seems mundane enough.
You realize you're not going to sate your curiosity by continuing to stare at it, you'll have to actually try it out to see if it works. You pick up the Magic Marker.
