The era is the Bakumatsu. The Edo Shogunate was driven into a corner by the intensifying movement to overthrow it by various clans that had betrayed it one after another.

Through the activities of Ryoma Sakamoto, a masterless samurai from Tosa, the powerful Satsuma and Choshu clans joined forces to participate in the overthrow. The cornered Shogunate eventually returned its governing authority to the Imperial Court.

The Kyoto Mimawarigumi, entrusted by the Shogunate to maintain order in Kyoto, harbored a grudge against Ryoma and began plotting his assassination...

Characters

Tadasaburo Sasaki

Commander of the Kyoto Mimawarigumi. Known by the nickname "Japan's Best Short-Sword User." He leads the plot to assassinate Ryoma Sakamoto.

Nobuo Imai

Member of the Kyoto Mimawarigumi. Studied the sword under Kenkichi Sakakibara. Participates in the Ryoma Sakamoto assassination plot.

Kitaro Watanabe

Member of the Kyoto Mimawarigumi. Studied the sword under Nobutomo Otani. Participates in the Ryoma Sakamoto assassination plot.

Katamori Matsudaira

Lord of the Aizu Clan and Kyoto Shugoshoku. Orders the Shinsengumi and Kyoto Mimawarigumi to maintain public order in Kyoto.

Isami Kondo

Chief Commander of the Shinsengumi. Cracks down on the Sonno Joi faction and others under the orders of Katamori Matsudaira.

Tomomi Iwakura

Court Noble. Once demoted for being seen as a Shogunate supporter, he was pardoned and became the spearhead of the anti-Shogunate faction in the court.

Ryoma Sakamoto

Advocate for opening the country and overthrowing the Shogunate. Formerly of the Sonno Joi faction, he left the Tosa Clan and turned to the pro-opening faction. A key figure in the Satcho Alliance and the return of political power to the Emperor.

Shintaro Nakaoka

Commander of the Rikuentai and close friend of Ryoma Sakamoto. After leaving the Tosa Clan, he formed the Rikuentai with the goal of overthrowing the Shogunate.

Tokichi Yamada

Ryoma Sakamoto's bodyguard. Originally a sumo wrestler, he worked various jobs before becoming Ryoma's bodyguard.

Tateki Tani

Retainer of the Tosa Clan. Formerly of the Sonno Joi faction, he converted to the pro-opening faction after meeting Ryoma Sakamoto.
