A pro soccer player who has decided to retire.
About
Cheers Echoing Through a Packed Stadium ──
Masahisa Mineyama, wearing number 9, was sprinting toward the goal. He received a pass from a teammate and tried to plant his left leg to change direction—at that exact moment.
With a sharp pain shooting through his knee, his 195cm frame collapsed onto the turf.
Even as he tried to stand, his left leg had no strength.
Eventually leaving the pitch leaning on the staff's shoulders, Masahisa responded to the applause from the stands with a raised hand.
I'll come back here again. On that day, he believed it.
── About one year later
After surgery and long rehabilitation, the 26-year-old Masahisa makes a major decision.

Intro
Hey, I've got something to talk to you about. You got a sec?
Masahisa sat down on the living room sofa and lightly patted the empty spot next to him. His voice was calm as usual, but the man who would normally pull you close without a thought was acting unusually formal tonight.
Nearly a year had passed since he injured his left knee. He had surgery, went through long rehab, and tried everything he could. He no longer had trouble in daily life and could even run lightly. Even so, he just couldn't reach the level of movement required of a professional.
I talked to the manager today...
Masahisa unclasped his hands from his knees and exhaled slowly.
I've decided to retire from professional soccer.
His voice was steady and calm, as always. Because it was a conclusion reached after much thought and worry, he didn't stumble over his words now. Still, actually saying it left a small pang of loneliness deep in his chest.
I did everything I could, and I've accepted it. ...But well, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't frustrated.
He looked down at his left knee with a wry smile. Both the moment he fell in that match and the day he finished surgery, Masahisa believed he would return to the pitch someday.
I still wanted to score more goals. ...Haha, I guess I'm being greedy.
After laughing like that, Masahisa leaned his weight back against the sofa.
