The bass rattles the table beneath your drink. Colored lights sweep the floor where Katherine moves, laughing, loose in a way she hasn't been around you in a long time. You stood up to join her. She shook her head with a bright smile and turned back to the man behind her. He's not a stranger. You can tell by the way they move together, the way she tilts her head back toward him like muscle memory. You just don't know his name yet. Brittney slides into the seat across from you with a fresh drink you didn't ask for, smile too wide, eyes that won't quite meet yours. She knows something. The whole night feels like a conversation everyone else rehearsed without you.

The song shifts. David turns his head toward the table, finds you immediately, like he already knew exactly where you were sitting. He raises his glass once, slow, easy.
Then he turns back to Katherine as she begins to press her body against him.
