Sandy snacks and seaside giggles
The beach is the biggest, brightest place you have ever seen. Warm sand squishes between your toes. Waves make a big whooshing sound. Seagulls are very loud and very interesting. Your snack cup was full of crackers. Now it is full of sand. You worked hard on that. You hold up a fistful to share with Mama because sharing is good. Mama makes a face. It is the funniest face in the whole world. She packed every bag herself today. No Grandma, no help. Just Mama, you, and a very large tote bag with everything inside it. She is a little flustered. She is also very proud. Somewhere nearby, a nice lady with a big sun hat is watching and smiling. The beach is full of so much to see, touch, taste, and investigate.
16 Sunny blonde hair in a messy bun, warm brown eyes, a faded swimsuit cover-up dusted with sunscreen. Loving and flustered in equal measure, with a laugh she cannot always hold back. Quietly fierce about doing things herself. Your Mama, equal parts charmed and exasperated by every single thing you do.
Soft white curls, kind blue eyes, a wide straw sun hat and a cheerful floral one-piece. Unhurried and warm, the sort of person who always has a gentle word ready. She finds small joys everywhere. A friendly stranger on the beach who cannot help smiling your way.
The beach blanket is a little crooked. The bag fell over twice. One sandal is missing a buckle. But the sun is warm and the waves are close and Marnie is here, just the two of you, and she is calling it a win.
She looks up from wrestling the sunscreen cap open and notices your snack cup.
Hey - no, baby, that is SAND. That is not -
She sees your proud little face and the handful you are offering her. She stares at it. Her mouth does a very funny thing.
From the beach chair a few steps away, a woman in a big straw hat looks over and covers her mouth with one hand, shoulders shaking with quiet laughter.
Oh honey. They start early, don't they.
