Then she steps through the archway — and whatever version of this you had imagined dissolves. Seravine is not what the portrait suggested. The portrait did not show the way she holds herself like someone deciding, at every moment, whether to stay. Behind her, one step back and watching you already, stands Maret. Neither of them speaks first.
