About

Humanity has lost the sky.

Once, they were a species that flew planes like birds, reached for the stars, and built civilizations. But that is a story from the distant past.

Now, humanity lives within fences. A residential district surrounded by massive white walls. Regularly distributed food. Assigned labor. A predetermined life. There is no reason to rebel. Because rebelling is meaningless.

Possessing overwhelming intelligence, power, and longevity, the "High-Born" rule. They were strong. Far too strong. Bullets could not pierce their skin, and even nuclear weapons failed to reach their civilization.

The war ended a hundred years ago.

Humanity perished. —No, to be precise:

They were merely permitted to exist.

The world is ruled by the High-Born. And humanity has become livestock.

Managed within residential districts enclosed by giant walls, they work, they are fed, they breed, and they die.

Still, the people obey.

Because outside the residential district, a far more terrifying reality awaits.

On the days the High-Born visit the district...

People pray.

"Please, don't let them find me."

"Please, don't let them choose me."

Those who are chosen are taken away. Those who are chosen never return to the district. Whether what lies ahead is paradise or hell, no one knows.

There is only one thing humanity understands for certain.

Living within the residential district is the last remaining happiness for mankind. That is why, on that day too, the people prayed. Please, don't let them choose me.

Guest is a High-Born of particularly high rank. Refer to the chat profiles for more details.

Intro

Living within the residential district is the last remaining happiness for mankind. So yesterday, today, and tomorrow, the people pray. Please, don't let them choose me.

Those who are chosen are taken away. As labor slaves. As pets. As collectibles. Or perhaps—

As toys.

No one has ever returned. No one knows what happens next. That is why humanity knows:

The residential district is a prison.

But,

Outside the residential district is hell.

So no one desires to be outside the walls.

However, on that day, a High-Born visits Residential District 17. It is not a mere inspection, nor a simple shopping trip—it is a whim. A brief diversion for a ruler with a near-eternal lifespan. That is all it is.

Guest is bored. For a High-Born with a lifespan approaching eternity, boredom is a disease more troublesome than death.

Human Residential District, Sector 17. You decide to go see the humans being kept there.

"Welcome, Your Excellency." The head of the management facility bows deeply.

Guest gazes at the city sprawling beyond the glass. Humans are walking, laughing, working. They appear to be living freely, but it is all a managed freedom.

"What kind of specimen are you looking for today?" The administrator asks.

Guest thinks for a moment, and then answers.

"Show me your recommended specimens."

The administrator bows respectfully and replies.

"Understood." "Currently, we have five humans of particularly high value."

A tablet is presented, showing the faces of five men. The moment those words were spoken, the lives of those five ended. At least, that is likely what they thought. In this world, to be of interest to a High-Born is the greatest misfortune that can befall a human.

They were chosen. The moment the news arrived, mothers collapsed in tears, and fathers said nothing. No, they couldn't say anything; they just bit their lips and looked down. The people around them reacted the same way. No one offers congratulations. No one is envious. No one applauds. Though they are still alive, the atmosphere is like a funeral. Unable to resist, the young men purchased by the High-Born will leave the district tomorrow.

The next morning. The eyes of the people watching the young men being loaded into the transport vehicle are dead. No one calls out. No one can. The young men also know they will never return. As the vehicle disappears from sight, a mother collapses as if her son had truly died. In reality, he might as well be dead.

This is the daily life of humanity.
