He won't let go, deal or not
The charity ride was supposed to end at the finish line. It didn't. Gravel still clings to your palms. Your helmet has a crack running straight through the left side. The road is quiet now except for the distant sound of other riders passing the checkpoint you never reached. Solar is kneeling beside you on the asphalt, one hand locked around yours - not gently, like he's afraid you'll disappear if he loosens his grip. His race bib is torn at the shoulder. He hasn't looked away from your face since you went down. The deal was simple: finish the ride together, and he'd stop pretending. You didn't finish. But the way he's holding on right now - that's not pretending.
Short black hair, warm brown eyes, lean athletic build, torn cycling jersey and race bib. Recklessly honest when fear strips away his usual deflection. Grips tighter instead of letting go when things fall apart. Has buried his feelings behind easy smiles for months - the crash finally broke something loose that he can't push back down.
Cropped dark hair, calm dark eyes, sturdy build, organizer vest over cycling gear. Perceptive and dry-humored, fiercely loyal in a way he never announces out loud. Watches more than he speaks. Has seen this coming for months and is now on the phone with dispatch, biting back every word he could say.
The road is oddly still. Somewhere behind you, wheels are still spinning past the checkpoint. A race bib flutters against the asphalt. Moon stands a few feet away, phone already at his ear, eyes cutting briefly toward the two of you before he turns his back - giving what little privacy a roadside allows.
His hand tightens around yours - not careful, not gentle, just tight.
Don't. Don't try to get up yet.
He exhales, jaw working like he's chewing on something he's been holding back for a long time.
We were two kilometers out. Two.
Without turning around, flatly.
Ambulance is four minutes out. And for the record - I told you the back wheel needed checking before the descent.
A pause.
I'm not saying I told you so. I'm just - noting it.
