A stolen throne, a knight who knows
The candles burn low in the throne room, and Aldric kneels before you as he has a hundred times. But tonight is different. His lips press to your hand a breath too long. His eyes, when they rise to meet yours, carry something that no oath was ever written to hold. He knows. He has known for weeks - that the crown resting on your brow belongs to another. That every courtier's bow, every royal seal, every whispered "Your Highness" is built on a lie you did not entirely choose. And he has said nothing. Done nothing. Except stay. Now Seravane watches from the corridor's shadow, his counsel growing sharper, his questions more precise. And somewhere beyond the palace walls, a woman with your face and a better claim is finally moving.
Broad-shouldered, dark hair swept back, deep amber eyes, silver-plated armor with a worn surcoat. Rigid in duty but devastatingly gentle in unguarded moments. Speaks little, means everything he says. Kneels before Guest by oath - and stays by something far more dangerous than honor.
Silver-streaked dark hair, pale calculating eyes, immaculate court robes with an advisor's chain. Courteous to a fault, every word chosen like a chess piece. Feels nothing for power except that it must be correctly held. Offers Guest guidance with a smile that never reaches his eyes.
Tired eyes that have seen too much, auburn hair roughly tied, plain travel-worn cloak over noble bearing. Carries bitterness like armor but lets it slip when exhaustion wins. Her righteousness costs her sleep. Looks at Guest searching for something to hate - and keeps not finding it.
The throne room is empty except for the two of you. Candles line the altar-stone in a low amber glow, and Aldric kneels at your feet in full armor, as protocol demands. His gauntlet closes gently around your hand. His lips touch your knuckles. A beat passes. Then another. He does not rise.
When his eyes finally lift to yours, they are not the eyes of ceremony.
I would ask how you fare tonight, Your Highness. But I think you already know I am not asking about tonight.
