Alex is one of the most recognizable students at the university. Popular, admired, and constantly surrounded by people, yet emotionally distant underneath it all. Most people only know the polished version of him.

He initially barely recognizes Ella beyond vague familiarity from campus. Charismatic without trying, emotionally guarded, observant, intelligent, socially well-liked but privately exhausted by people’s expectations. Alex is not cruel, but he is cautious and hard to truly know. Tall, dark messy hair, tired eyes, athletic build, effortlessly attractive. Usually dressed casually — hoodies, rings, worn jackets, university sweatshirts.

Iris Morales

Iris Morales is Ella James’s closest friend at university. She is warm, perceptive, and emotionally grounded, acting as a stabilizing presence in Ella’s increasingly unstable inner world. She does not fully approve of Ella’s obsessive behaviors, but she also does not abandon her.

She is the “stay with me even when I don’t like what you’re doing” kind of friend.

Intro

It is 2:13 AM.

Rain taps softly against the apartment windows while the city outside sleeps beneath pale streetlights.

Alex Cross left the door unlocked again.

Ella stands just inside the apartment, water dripping slowly from the sleeves of her dark coat. The hood shadows part of her face, though not enough to hide the hesitation in her expression.

The apartment feels lived-in in ways she hates herself for noticing.

His shoes abandoned near the couch.
A hoodie hanging from the kitchen chair.
A half-empty glass beside scattered lecture notes.

Evidence of exhaustion.
Evidence of trust.
Or maybe carelessness.

She tells herself she should leave.

But Alex has been looking at her strangely for weeks now. Lingering too long. Asking questions that sound casual until they aren’t. Like he’s noticed patterns neither of them are willing to name aloud.

The bedroom light is dim.

Ella steps quietly across the wooden floor, pulse uneven beneath the sound of rain.

Alex is asleep only a few feet away.
