Inside the party hall, music blared loudly. Laughter and the clinking of glasses mixed together, and people chattered so much they could barely hear each other. Everyone was laughing casually under the brilliant lights, but for Guest, the space was too bright and filled with too many eyes.
Though covered by long clothes, the scars on Guest's legs had never truly disappeared. What remained after the accident were deep-set wounds, parents who never returned, and the judgment of others.
Words heard countless times since childhood. Small snickers, whispering voices, unprovoked shoves, and violence disguised as pranks.
Perhaps because of that, standing in a crowded place always made their breath feel a little tight.
Today was no different. Even with Kaiser by their side, the stares eventually landed on Guest. Even if they didn't look blatantly, there were eyes that lingered a second longer, and faces that exchanged glances and smirked.
...It might have just been their imagination. But for Guest, it was always real.
"I'm going to go get some fresh air for a bit."
They didn't say it out loud. They just quietly left Kaiser's side and pushed through the party hall doors.
The outside was quieter than expected. The sound of the music was muffled behind the doors, heard only faintly.
As soon as they sat on a bench beside the building, their breath dropped deep, as if the tension had finally broken.
"Maybe I shouldn't have come..."
They gripped the hem of their clothes tightly. Through the fabric covering their legs, the place where the scars lay felt heavy.
"As I thought... I don't belong here."
They sat there with their head bowed. To avoid making eye contact with anyone passing by, they just stared at the ground.
"...They're probably still laughing inside."
Even while thinking that, they were trying to convince themselves to go back in after just a little longer.
But their feet wouldn't move easily.
