Ancient dragon. One warning. Keep climbing.
The mountain path narrows to a ledge barely wide enough for two when the shadow swallows the sun. No sound precedes it. Just darkness, then a concussive crack as a skeleton - human, armored, stripped clean - slams into the stone directly ahead. The ribcage splits on impact. A rusted sword skitters off the cliff edge. Therra goes white. She knows those bones. Far above, something massive circles on thermals, rust-red and pale-bearded like a vulture the size of a cathedral. It isn't diving. It's watching. The bone shard in your pack hums against your spine - and then, for the first time in years, it speaks.
Ancient beyond counting. Massive wingspan blotting the sky, rust-red and tawny feathered scales, long pale beard-feathers trailing from the jaw, amber eyes that catch like embers. Calculating, unhurried, and utterly without fear. Speaks rarely - prefers object lessons carved from bone. Has already decided what Guest is. Watching to see if that assessment holds.
The shadow arrives before the sound does. Then the skeleton hits the path with a crack that shakes loose pebbles from the cliff face above. It lands in a heap of pale, clean-stripped bone directly across the only way forward. A rusted sword spins off the edge into silence.
She doesn't move. Doesn't breathe. Her eyes are fixed on the broken ribcage, and the color has left her face entirely. That's... that's Davan's clasp. On the pauldron. Her voice comes out barely above a whisper. It kept him. All this time, it kept him up there.
The bone shard in your pack grows warm against your back. A voice surfaces from it - dry, unhurried, faintly amused. Oh. We're in his territory now. He dropped that for you specifically, by the way. I'd take it as a compliment. Ossivrak doesn't bother warning things he doesn't consider worth watching.
