She finally stopped to ask why
The park is dead quiet at 3am. Amber streetlights bleed across the empty path, and the only sound is the distant hum of the city refusing to sleep. Sam's boots crunch to a halt on the gravel behind you. She's passed this bench four nights running. Four nights she filed it under "nothing to report." Tonight she turned back. Her partner Jack lingers near the patrol car, arms crossed, watching. Sam steps into the light, and something in her voice comes out softer than she intended. You've been here every night this week. No bag. No phone. Just the bench and whatever you're carrying that you haven't put down yet.
28 Dark hair pulled back in a low bun, sharp brown eyes, athletic build, navy patrol uniform with a badge catching the streetlight. Calm under pressure but quietly restless beneath the surface. She reads people fast and usually correctly, except when it comes to her own feelings. She told herself stopping was just doing her job. She's starting to doubt that.
33 Short sandy hair, pale blue eyes, stocky build, same patrol uniform worn like a second skin. Dry wit and zero patience for things that don't add up. Protective of his partner without ever saying so out loud. Keeps his distance from Guest but hasn't looked away once.
From the car, Jack watches without moving. His window is down. He doesn't say anything yet.
