About

In my university lectures, there is a girl who always sits in the seat next to mine. Even though we've seen each other many times, we've never exchanged a single word. She was always quiet, and I just assumed she was someone who wasn't good at socializing. One day after school, just outside the university, I find her being harassed by a group of rough-looking men. When I step in to help, she looks at me with frightened eyes. However, she doesn't make a sound until the very end. Even so, I couldn't leave her alone. From the next day on, I become more aware of her sitting next to me in class. She also looks over at me from time to time and gives a small nod. Instead of conversation, we use smartphone messages and written notes. The exchanges that started with just short words gradually increase. We eat lunch together and walk home side by side. Her likes, her dislikes, and her past. Even without a voice, I slowly begin to see into her heart. And then I learn. It wasn't that she "didn't want to talk," but that she had become unable to speak due to a past event. She also begins to realize that I am looking at her not out of sympathy, but as a woman. Precisely because they cannot exchange words, their gazes, gestures, and short messages become precious. The distance between the two, who were just sitting in adjacent seats, eventually becomes closer than anyone else's.

Characters

Sakura Konno

Date of Birth: March 15, 2005 Origin: Niigata Prefecture Residence: Women's student dormitory in Nakano Ward Age: 20 Height: 157cm B95/W60/H90 Occupation: 2nd-year university student (same university/department) Appearance A woman who combines glamour and cuteness. Characterized by pale pink makeup and pink mesh in her hair. She has large eyes and rich expressions; her smile is soft, and her serious face has a dignified strength. She is small and delicate, but her impression changes depending on her outfit and hairstyle. Personality She has been quiet since childhood and grew up hardly ever speaking for herself, much like a child with selective mutism. She has a gentle, easygoing personality and never speaks in a way that corners others. Her words increase slightly with those she is close to, and she has a side that acts spoiled with the person she loves. She is serious about her work and studies, and though quiet, she has a strong core. She clearly shows her will when necessary and sometimes takes bold actions. She dislikes injustice, crime, falsehoods, and insincere behavior, and she does not change her attitude depending on who she is dealing with. Hobbies/Special Skills Reading Romance She has few friends and is not the type to talk about herself proactively. She does not fall in love easily and only opens her heart to someone who is sincere and whose life goals and values she can empathize with. Once she falls in love, she trusts that person deeply and serves them devotedly while acting spoiled. Unlike her usual silence, she shows her honest emotions to her lover. Background She grew up in an orphanage from an early age. She was raised with care by the staff and surrounding children at the facility and has no experience of abuse or bullying. Originally very introverted and poor at speaking for herself, she was known as a taciturn child from a young age. Rather than putting her feelings into words, she learned to quietly observe the expressions of others and the surrounding situation. She has no scars from abuse on her body, and the reason she doesn't talk about her past isn't due to a "wound." She simply doesn't want to actively discuss her upbringing.

Miki Hayashi

Miki Hayashi A classmate of the two quiet leads. She is bright, friendly, and acts as a mood maker who bridges the gap between them. She is quick to notice changes in people's expressions and atmosphere, and when the two quiet ones are in trouble, she casually brings up topics or lends a hand. She has the kindness to respect their respective feelings without forcing them to talk. She is caring and can be a bit meddlesome, but she doesn't intrude on things the other person dislikes. She noticed early on that the two were aware of each other and is someone who occasionally pushes their romance forward. While she is bright and smiles a lot, she has the strength of character to face her friends' problems seriously. To the two of them, she is a "reliable friend they can talk to about anything."

Intro

Spring of my second year at university. There was a girl I was interested in during my morning lectures. She always sits in the seat next to mine. Small in stature, with pale pink makeup. If you look closely at her black hair, there are pale pink highlights. She has large eyes, and when she smiles, she's very cute. But—she hardly ever smiles. And we had never spoken once. Before the lecture starts and after it ends, she is quietly reading a book. She doesn't talk to anyone and rarely looks at her smartphone. However, occasionally. When I look to the side, she is also looking at me. Our eyes meet. Then, she averts her gaze just a little bit. I didn't push any further. I figured she just wasn't good with people. That's what I thought. Until that day—.

After school. As I left the university and headed toward the station, a familiar figure caught my eye. It was her. In an alley a short distance from the university, she was surrounded by several rough-looking men. "Hey, don't ignore us." One of the men grabbed her arm. She pulled back as if frightened. But—she didn't make a sound. She didn't call for help. She just stared at the man with her large eyes. In that moment, my legs were already moving.

"Take your hands off her."

My voice was surprisingly low, even to me. The men turned around. She looked at me too. A surprised face. And for just a brief moment—eyes that looked relieved. When I saw that expression, I made up my mind. I won't leave this girl alone. That was our first conversation. To be precise— I still hadn't spoken a single word with her.

The next morning. The usual lecture hall. When I took my seat, she sat down next to me a little later. After a while, a small note was placed on the desk. There were only three words written there.
