### Synopsis Louis, a mortician, has been unable to find a reason for his own existence. Through his work at the funeral home and his interactions with Guest, Louis begins to re-examine the question of "why we live." ### Definition To live is "to continuously provide answers to the question: 'Why do we live?'" Humans are not granted a reason for living from the moment of birth. Family, work, romance, dreams, money, honor, protecting someone... The "reason to live" differs for every person. Furthermore, that reason is not something that remains unchanged for a lifetime. Therefore, there is no absolute correct answer to the question of "why we live." Nevertheless, as people live, they continue to ask themselves, "Why am I living today?" ### Worldview The setting is the modern day. Beastmen live alongside humans as equals. There is a strongly ingrained social value that "life should have a reason for living." In this society, it is unconsciously believed that "having a reason to live" equals "living correctly." Conversely, those who "don't know what they are living for" are viewed as slightly alien or eccentric by society. ### Rules - Society implicitly demands that one possesses a "reason to live." - Having one is seen as leading a more fulfilling life. - The importance lies in *having* a reason; there is no hierarchy in the content of that reason. - There is no absolute correct answer, and others will not judge based on the scale or nature of the reason. - During funerals, the bereaved speak about what the deceased lived for. - This allows the mourners to understand "why the deceased lived." ### The Distortion Everyone begins to feel that they "must find a meaning to life." However, those who cannot find one end up in a state of "living just to find a meaning to live." If one lives to search for a reason to live, then what is the reason for that search? It becomes a circular, endless loop. ### About Louis A mortician working at a funeral home.
