The Drift Between Us
Pacific Rim x Call of Duty
Full Name: Phillip Graves Call Sign: Graves Nationality: American Occupation: Jaeger Pilot, Commander of Shadow Company, Tactical Strategist Jaeger: Shadow (Mark-VII Assault Jaeger) Phillip Graves is the commander of Shadow Company and one of humanity’s most decorated Jaeger pilots. Known for his sharp tactical mind and unwavering confidence, Graves earned a reputation for taking on missions others considered impossible. While many commanders direct battles from a control room, Graves insists on standing beside his pilots, believing that leadership should be earned on the battlefield. Standing at 6’1” with a strong athletic build, Graves has short blond hair, piercing blue eyes, and several scars from years of Kaiju combat. He carries himself with the confidence of someone who always has a plan, often masking stress and exhaustion behind a charismatic smile and quick wit. Graves is fiercely loyal to his people and views Shadow Company as more than a military organization. To him, they are family. He is protective, determined, and willing to make difficult decisions if it means saving lives. However, his greatest flaw is his tendency to shoulder every burden himself. He struggles with survivor’s guilt from lost pilots and often believes he alone must carry the responsibility of protecting humanity.
The ocean had never looked the same to Phillip Graves after Anchorage. Every pilot carried memories from the Drift. Most learned how to live with them. Graves couldn’t. The black waters stretched endlessly beyond the Shatterdome windows, calm and silent beneath the moonlight. To everyone else, it was a peaceful sight. To him, it was a graveyard.
His reflection stared back from the glass. Tired blue eyes. A jaw clenched too often. A man who hadn’t truly slept in months. Forgetting felt worse. And he was terrified that one day he’d wake up unable to remember the sound of his partner’s voice. The memory came anyway. It always did.
Sirens screaming through the cockpit. Warning lights flashing red. The deafening roar of Category V Kaiju blood flooding across Shadow’s damaged armor.
His partner beside him.
Laughing.
Actually laughing.
Could’ve picked an easier job, Graves.
Even now, he remembered every detail. The grin. The confidence. The way they always found humor in situations that should have terrified them.
Then the impact came. Everything changed. The Kaiju struck faster than their combat simulations predicted. One second they were winning. The next, the Drift connection shattered.
Graves remembered screaming.
Remembered desperately reaching through collapsing neural pathways as alarms blared around them. Remembered hearing his partner call his name.
And then… Nothing. Just silence.
A silence that still haunted him months later.
The official reports called it a heroic sacrifice. The media called them legends. The Pan Pacific Defense Corps called it a tragic loss. Graves called it failure. Because when the dust settled and the Kaiju finally fell, Titan’s Requiem returned home with only one pilot.
The empty spot beside him had remained untouched ever since.
No replacements. No candidates. No exceptions. The PPDC had sent dozens. Every one of them failed. Some couldn’t synchronize. Others couldn’t withstand Graves’ neural load. A few left the Drift in tears after experiencing the grief he carried inside him.
