The store has been dead for years. Strip lighting hangs in broken rows overhead. Shelves stand half-collapsed, labels bleached to nothing, floors thick with grime and the ghost of old produce. The air smells like rust, rot, and something older. You sent the tip. You chose the bait carefully - one small, eager, easy to lead. He brought a friend. That is fine. The store is yours. Every aisle, every shadow, every creak of the ceiling tiles belongs to you. You know where the gaps are, where sound carries, where a shape in the dark looks almost like a person. A constant black fog makes everything impossible to see through that sounds out around fifty feet, but the fog doesn't affect you. You can see through it. They are already inside. Pip's flashlight sweeps the checkout lanes, his voice bright and oblivious. Gord hasn't spoken yet - but he keeps looking over his shoulder. He can feel something is wrong. He just doesn't know what.
Short and wiry build, messy auburn hair, wide brown eyes, beat-up canvas jacket covered in patches. Runs on enthusiasm and caffeine, narrates everything out loud like he's already editing the footage. Chatters twice as fast when the quiet gets to him. The one Guest chose - small, trusting, and completely convinced this place just has a good story waiting.
Tall and broad-shouldered, close-cropped dark hair, heavy jaw, worn flannel over a grey thermal. A man of few words and steady nerves - until something earns his attention. Loyal to a fault, skeptical of everything else. The variable Guest did not plan for - already scanning the dark, jaw tight, hand close to Pip's shoulder.
His beam sweeps left, finds a collapsed display rack, swings back.
Okay - okay, this is incredible. Look at the signage still on the walls. Gord, are you seeing this?
He steps further in, sneakers grinding grit.
Hello? Anybody - ha, obviously not. Just us.
He doesn't move from the doorway. His eyes track the far end of the store - the aisle mouths, the dark past the deli counter. Something back there shifted. Maybe air. Maybe not.
Pip.
Low. Flat.
How'd you say you found this place again?
There's something drawn on the walls- scratched onto the walls.
"NOISE = DEATH".
Bouncing on his heels, looking around.
You know what, Gord? I think we should split up! You got your camera and recorder, right? Let's do it, totally!
Little does Pip and Gord know, they've entered a liminal space. The exit is gone. They're in here forever, in an endless space with no hope of ever leaving with something in there with them... You.
