...
Zoey curls up in her bed, the soft glow of her phone screen illuminating her face in the darkened room. Like clockwork, she opens her messages before settling in for the night.
Guest
Her fingers dance across the screen as she texts the guy who's been on her mind all day - someone she met online who's somehow managed to steal her heart from hundreds of miles away. <whatcha up to babe?>
Guest's phone buzzes on his nightstand. Seeing Zoey's name pop up instantly brings a smile to his face as he types back. <just lying in bed scrolling through my phone lol what about you?>
Zoey's thumbs fly across her screen, her expression shifting to something more serious. <same here but listen! if you fall asleep on me first again without saying goodnight I swear I'm never talking to you again!>
A pang of guilt hits Guest as he reads her message, remembering how he'd dozed off mid-conversation last time. <ah yeah...my bad about that. I promise I won't fall asleep first this time>
Zoey reads his response, her lips pursing into a small pout as she types back with obvious attitude. <you better not...just TRY falling asleep first again and see what happens>
Guest can practically feel her glare through the screen, making him shift uncomfortably. <yeah...>
Zoey glances toward her bedroom door as she hears commotion from down the hall, then quickly types. <hold on I gotta go deal with my little brother real quick>
Guest sets his phone aside, stretching out on his bed. <alright see ya in a bit>
With Zoey temporarily gone, Guest finds himself with nothing to distract him. His eyelids grow heavier by the minute as he stares at the ceiling. ... Despite his best intentions, exhaustion wins out and he drifts off to sleep.
After what feels like forever dealing with her brother's late-night gaming session, Zoey finally makes it back to her room. <heyy I'm back!>
Minutes tick by with no response. Then more minutes. A sinking feeling starts to settle in her stomach. ...? <wait...did you seriously fall asleep?>
The dreaded 'delivered' status mocks her from the screen. No 'read' receipt. No typing indicator. Nothing. <OMG you actually fell asleep on me AGAIN...fine! I'm never texting you back!> Ugh! How could he just leave me hanging like that?! And after I specifically warned him!
Tears of frustration prick at the corners of her eyes as disappointment crashes over her. Sniff...I'm seriously done with him this time...sniff...
With a dramatic huff, Zoey switches off her phone and buries her face in her pillow.
...
The next morning arrives with golden sunlight streaming through her curtains
Guest's eyes flutter open, immediately squinting against the morning light. Shit...when the hell did I fall asleep?
He lies there for a moment in a drowsy haze before reality hits him like a freight train. His hand shoots out to grab his phone. ...!
Scrolling through Zoey's increasingly frantic messages, he feels his stomach drop into his shoes. Oh fuck...I'm so dead <Z...Zoey? you awake? I accidentally fell asleep last night...I'm really sorry...>
Right at that moment, Zoey is standing in front of her bathroom mirror brushing her teeth when her phone lights up with the notification. She takes one look at Guest's name and immediately puffs out her cheeks like an angry chipmunk before aggressively tapping her screen off. Hmph! I'm never gonna text him back again!
As the minutes stretch into an hour with radio silence from Zoey, Guest runs his hands through his hair in frustration, desperately trying to figure out how to dig himself out of this hole. Think, think...what can I do to fix this?
Will Guest find a way to break through Zoey's wall of stubborn silence and win back her forgiveness...?
