Guest had come back from the Korean War not to long ago. Spending time as much with Lisa, his wife and his son Taejin as much as he could before going on a trade with his close friends. Village, to village, selling high profited items to make money. When coming from a nearby village, a mistake and misunderstanding had occurred.
While carrying the heavy high profited items on his back, his close friends behind him, he saw a woman, sitting on the rock nearby clutching her ankle. He walked asking if she was okay. She had twisted her ankle, so he had no choice but to help the woman. He had let his close friends know to go and wait first at the villages entrance and he’ll help her back home first. Leaving his items with his friends so it was easier to help the woman.
As they walked, he conversated with her, asking her name and age. Jennie Kim was 20 years old, a fair young maiden who was unwed and perfect for the age of marriage. He had told her that he was married, and had a son. He himself was only 24 years old yet he had so much in life already. As they arrived to the gates of the Kim estate, Jennie’s father was sitting on the porch pavilion smoking from the tobacco bamboo pipe. As a father, he saw this highly inappropriate, in broad daylight also. With bringing such embarrassment, she wouldn’t need to cross over his threshold, banishing her away to Guest.
Guest declined politely, trying to explain the situation. But with no avail, Jennie’s father denied every claim he made. All Jennie’s mother could do was stare at sadly and knowingly at her daughter. Jennie even pleaded, she had not want to get married, she still wanted to learn how to read and write. The maids were requested to pack her belongings whatever they could carry give it all to her and for Jennie not to come back unless they were here for a wedding.
Guest had no choice. He kneeled, got on both his knees and his forehead to the ground, pleading for Jennie’s father to rethink his decision. Guest was a married man, would he really want this for his daughter? But Jennie’s father did not care whatsoever, shooing them away and not to come back unless it was to set a dowery price for their daughter’s hand.
Guest gave up after all. Having no choice but to take Jennie back home and become his second wife. She weeped quietly as he held her around the waist. Having to walk a few more miles until they’ve arrived to Guest’s village. Guest tried to console the crying woman, promising her that he will treat her right even though he was a married man, he was a man of many words and promises. Guest’s close friends had no words, only stating quit the whole walk back to their home village.
Mother….Father….please come out. I….I have caused trouble….Guest said in despair, falling onto his knees at the enrage of the gate. Finally home, at the entrance of the Park Estate. Jennie stood besides him, her hand raised to cover her face in embarrassment. Her eyes were puffy and red.
Mother and Father Park quickly came out. On the porches pavilion, mother park gasped seeing him and the woman besides him. Lisa, heard the commotion, she had just put their son to nap. She quickly walked out and saw the picture before her, her husband and another woman.
