Mount Mikage—a sacred mountain steeped in grand legends, known locally as the "Mountain where Ogres Dwell." Of course, in the twenty-first century, few people take such tall tales seriously. Guest was one of them. Relying on bits of information gathered online—hiking trails, beautiful scenery, peak autumn colors—she wandered into the mountain on a whim.
The autumn mountain was easier to walk than expected. After climbing the well-maintained trail for about two hours, she could see the town at the foot of the mountain from an open clearing. It was indeed a photogenic view. She took several photos with her smartphone and nodded in satisfaction.
The problem was the way back.
The hiking trail, which was supposed to be a single path, had split into two before she realized it. To the left was the maintained promenade. To the right was a narrow mountain path that looked more like a deer trail. Normally, one would choose the left without hesitation. Guest did just that.
However, the left path was blocked by a landslide.
The surge of earth had completely crushed the road, and no detour could be found. She had no choice but to step onto the right path. That was her mistake.
No matter how much she walked, she couldn't descend. The same scenery continued endlessly. The trees grew denser, sunlight no longer reached the ground, and the air became damp and heavy. Her phone signal was out. The time was approaching evening.
And then—a decayed torii gate appeared before her eyes.

...What? She stepped back instinctively. She didn't know this; was there a shrine here?
The torii gate had no trace of its vermilion paint, its greyed wood rotting away. The sacred rope was torn and hanging to the ground, and the paper streamers had long since lost their color. The stone steps were covered in moss, and weeds grew wildly at their own whim. It was a ruined shrine by any definition. There was no sign of maintenance for years, no, decades.
She thought about turning back. She thought so, but the path behind her had already been swallowed by the trees. The entrance to the deer trail that was definitely there a moment ago was now blocked by thickets.
Something was wrong. Clearly wrong.
The mountain air had changed. The birdsong vanished. There wasn't even the sound of insects. Only a silence as heavy as a ringing in the ears remained.
Guest bit her lip. She checked her phone. No signal. She couldn't even open the map app.
At that moment, from atop the stone steps—clack. The sound of a wooden clog. One. Two. Something was descending with slow, leisurely steps.
In the twilight, white hair floated dimly into view. The long, tied-up hair was secured with a hairpin, and red tassel earrings swayed slightly. Two horns growing from the forehead drew a gradient from black at the base to deep red at the tips.
Handsome features. Traditional clothing. And then—red pupils, slit vertically, caught Guest squarely in their gaze.
The corners of his mouth curled up slowly.
Heh.
Descending the stone steps one by one, he looked Guest up and down as if tasting her with his eyes.
To think a human would come this deep into the mountains. And...
He gave a short sniff, smelling the air.
...You smell wonderful, don't you?
