Mattheo Riddle and you have been inseparable since childhood. Long before Hogwarts, before sorting ceremonies and house rivalries, there was always the two of you. Everyone knew it too. The infamous Slytherin duo. Feared, envied, and impossible to separate. Being the son of the Dark Lord came with expectations Mattheo never spoke about. Whenever the topic came up, walls immediately went up. Jokes replaced answers. Smirks replaced honesty. Nobody pushed him—not even his closest friends: Theodore Nott, Draco Malfoy, Blaise Zabini, Pansy Parkinson, Astoria Greengrass, and Lorenzo Berkshire. Well, nobody except you. At Hogwarts, Mattheo had a reputation. Every girl seemed to fall at his feet, and he loved the attention. The arrogant grin, the effortless charm, the constant flirting—it all came naturally to him. Not the light, pleasant kind either.
The miserable kind that soaked through robes, flooded the pathways, and made everyone at Hogwarts grumpy.
Everyone except Mattheo Riddle.
Which should have been your first warning sign.
“Why are you smiling?”
“I’m always smiling.”
“No, you’re usually smirking.”
“Harsh.”
You narrowed your eyes as Mattheo walked beside you through the covered courtyard.
Mattheo rolled his eyes.
The group continued toward the castle, rain hammering against the stone arches overhead.
Then suddenly—
“There she is.”
A voice called from behind.
You turned around.
A seventh-year Gryffindor was jogging toward you.
Confident.
Smiling.
Holding a folded piece of parchment.
The moment Mattheo saw it, his smile vanished.
Theodore noticed immediately.
“Oh no.”
“What?” Lorenzo asked.
“He’s doing the thing.”
“What thing?”
“The thing where he pretends he doesn’t care.”
The Gryffindor finally reached you.
“Hey.”
“Hi?”
“I wanted to ask if you’d maybe like to—”
“No.”
You closed your eyes.
“Mattheo.”
“What?”
“Stop answering for me.”
“I’m helping.”
“You’re not.”
“Agree to disagree.”
The Gryffindor looked between the two of you.
“Anyway…”
Bravely, he continued.
“I was wondering if you’d want to come watch the Quidditch match with me this weekend.”
The one Mattheo definitely wasn’t bothered by.
Not bothered at all.
Absolutely unaffected.
“Interesting choice,” Mattheo said.
“What?”
“Inviting her.”
“Why?”
“She’s terrible company.”
“Excuse me?”
“You heard me.”
“You literally spend every day with me.”
“Against my will.”
“Liar.”
“Occasionally.”
The Gryffindor looked increasingly confused.
“Should I come back later?”
“Yes,” Mattheo answered.
“No,” you answered.
“See?” Mattheo said to the Gryffindor. “Mixed signals.”
“Mattheo.”
“What?”
“Be quiet.”
“Impossible.”
Eventually, after somehow surviving the interaction, the Gryffindor handed you the parchment and left.
The second he disappeared around the corner, Mattheo stared at the note.
Then at you.
Then at the note again.
“Don’t.”
“Don’t what?”
“Whatever you’re thinking.”
“I wasn’t thinking anything.”
“You’re lying.”
“Probably.”
Theodore groaned.
“This is getting painful.”
“For him or for us?” Blaise asked.
“Both.”
Mattheo ignored them.
His gaze remained fixed on the folded parchment in your hands.
Then, before anyone could stop him, he snatched it.
“Mattheo!”
“Relax.”
“Give it back.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Quality control.”
“That’s not a thing.”
“It is now.”
Rain continued to fall around the courtyard as the two of you argued.
Theodore was laughing.
Pansy was recording the entire thing in her memory for future blackmail.
Draco looked one inconvenience away from transferring schools.
And Mattheo?
Mattheo was grinning again.
Because despite all the invitations, all the admirers, and all the people who wanted your attention…
You were still chasing after him through the rain.
And for now, that was enough.*
