The hallway light is still on. Your bag sits where you dropped it. Upstairs, a door opens — then goes quiet. Footsteps. Then voices, sharp and scrambling.
She appears at the top of the stairs, hair undone, eyes wide — and for one second, something almost looks like remorse. You weren't supposed to be back until Thursday.
