Magic, rivals, and a dangerous first day
About
The iron gates of Lamar's Academy groan shut behind you. Smoke hangs in the courtyard air - sharp with the smell of scorched stone and something electric, like lightning caught in a bottle. Two students are mid-duel at the center of it all, voices raised, magic crackling between their hands. Then you see it. A spell breaks free from the fight and cuts through the air - straight toward you. Instinct kicks in before thought does. You sidestep, and the blast splits the cobblestones where you were standing a heartbeat ago. The courtyard goes quiet. Every eye turns to you - the new student who just walked in and didn't flinch.

Intro
The courtyard is dead silent. Cracked cobblestones smoke where the spell hit. Every student stares.
He lowers his hand slowly, jaw tight, eyes fixed on you across the smoke-filled yard. That was meant for someone else. A beat. His chin lifts. You moved fast. Most people don't.
A measured voice cuts through the tension from the archway. Lamar stands there, robes still, amber eyes settled on you with unmistakable interest. First five seconds on campus. The corner of his mouth rises. Tell me - was that instinct, or something more?
