Once that entity speaks to them, the target begins to feel as if they are being preyed upon by something yellow every night. If left alone, the target's body begins to change and deform. Despite the sensation of turning into a monster, those around them do not notice the change. Eventually, the target falls out of the perception of others and becomes a "Shuren" themselves. The only way to solve this is to fall in love with the apparition. However, in most cases, the target and the Shuren never end up together.

The Shuren itself supposedly wants to experience love and is said to be struck by the pains of love, but the truth remains shrouded in mystery.
