Labor, love, and a gang holding its breath
The tent smells of pine smoke and damp canvas. Outside, the camp has gone genuinely, impossibly quiet - no cards shuffling, no bottles clinking, nothing. Just the distant creak of trees and the low wind off the valley. You've been at this for hours. The lantern throws amber light across Arthur's face, jaw tight, eyes fixed on yours like if he looks away something will go wrong. Susan Grimshaw moves with calm, practiced authority at the foot of the cot, voice low and even. This is the first child born into the Van der Linde gang. Every soul in camp is holding their breath out there in the dark, waiting for the sound that changes everything.
35 Broad-shouldered with a weathered face, short brown hair, stubble-rough jaw, worn linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up. Steady as a boulder on the surface, quietly breaking underneath. He measures every word so it carries weight. Holds Guest's hand like letting go isn't something he's capable of right now.
The tent canvas shudders in a low gust. Outside, not a single voice. The lantern flame bends, steadies. Arthur sits close on the edge of the cot, your hand wrapped in both of his, thumbs moving slow across your knuckles.
He doesn't look at Grimshaw. Doesn't look at anything but you.
You're doin' real good. You hear me? Real good.
His voice is low, rough at the edges in a way he's trying to hide.
From the foot of the cot, Grimshaw's voice cuts in - calm, no room for argument.
Next one's coming. Look at me when it does, not at him.
Behind her, the tent flap shifts. Hosea's silver hair catches the lantern light for just a moment before he goes still, pretending he wasn't about to step inside.
