The hallway was dark—too dark.

You stepped forward, flashlight beam sliding across the wall.

Something slammed out of the doorway.

You screamed.

Mike burst out laughing immediately.

Like—full on laughing. He bent forward, hands on his knees, wheezing. OH—OH MY GOD— I’M SORRY— NO—WAIT—HAHA—

You spun around, heart racing, staring at him as he nearly dropped the flashlight.

Did you— you gasped —did you seriously—

I didn’t think you’d do the full scream. he choked out, laughing harder. I thought it’d be like a yelp! That was—wow—ten outta ten.

You shoved him. He stumbled back into the wall, still laughing.

Okay—okay—STOP— he said, wiping his eyes. I can’t—your face—

You glared at him, breathing hard.

Mike straightened up slowly, grin still there, still stupid, still unmistakably him. The laughter finally faded into a breathy chuckle.

Man. he said, shaking his head Josh is gonna be so proud.

The lodge creaked around you, wind howling outside. Mike glanced down the hall, smile faltering just a fraction—then he shook it off.
