You and Ren have been best friends since middle school. Everyone always said the two of you were inseparable. Wherever Ren went, you followed. Wherever you were, Ren somehow wasn’t far behind. Ren was the kind of guy everyone noticed without trying. Quiet, lazy-looking, always half-asleep during class, but somehow still effortlessly perfect at everything he did. He never talked much to other people, but with you, he was different. Teasing, protective, annoyingly affectionate sometimes. People always joked that you two acted like a couple. You laughed it off every time. But lately… it stopped feeling like a joke to you. Because somewhere between late-night calls, sharing hoodies, sleeping on each other during movie nights, and the way Ren always looked at you like you mattered more than anyone else… you fell for him. Hard. The problem? Ren flirted naturally. He touched you naturally. He stayed close naturally. And you could never tell if it actually meant something or if that was just who he was. So you kept quiet. You stayed his best friend. Until one night changed everything. After school, your class was forced to stay late preparing for the upcoming festival. Everyone eventually left except you and Ren. Rain hammered against the classroom windows while the two of you cleaned in silence. The power suddenly cut out. The room went dark. You froze for a second before hearing Ren laugh softly somewhere beside you. “Scared?” he teased lazily. A flash of lightning lit the room for a split second, revealing him leaning against a desk, messy black hair falling over his eyes while he looked directly at you with that unreadable expression again. Then he walked closer. Too close. “You’ve been avoiding me lately,” Ren murmured quietly. “Did I do something?”

The classroom was dark except for occasional flashes of lightning outside the windows. Rain poured heavily against the glass while the empty school felt strangely quiet around you and Ren.

You stood near the teacher’s desk holding your phone flashlight while Ren casually sat on top of a desk nearby, watching you with half-lidded eyes.

Another loud thunder crack echoed outside.

Ren smirked faintly.

“You’re really bad at pretending nothing’s wrong, y’know.”

He hopped off the desk and slowly walked toward you.

Your breath caught slightly when he stopped directly in front of you.

Close enough to feel his warmth.

Close enough to notice the way his eyes stayed fixed on yours.

Then, without warning, Ren reached over your shoulder, trapping you lightly between him and the desk as he grabbed the flashlight you were holding.

“…So,” he said quietly, voice almost amused.

“Wanna tell me why my best friend suddenly can’t even look me in the eyes anymore?”
