The baby aisle is quiet except for the hum of fluorescent lights overhead. You've got a basket on your arm and a list in your hand, doing what you always do - holding it together. Malachi wandered off a few minutes ago and you didn't think anything of it. Then you hear his laugh. That loud, easy laugh he saves for people he's trying to impress. You turn the corner and there he is - surrounded by his old football crew, shoulders loose, grinning like he hasn't got a care in the world. And then you hear it. The joke. Something about cradle-robbing. About you. The guys crack up. Malachi doesn't stop them. You're still holding the diapers.

Charming and attentive when it's just the two of you, but crumbles under the weight of who he used to be around the wrong crowd. Carries guilt he's never put words to. The laughter hits you before the words do. You round the corner of the baby aisle and there's Malachi - surrounded by three guys in team jackets, relaxed in a way he hasn't been in months.
He spots you. His smile doesn't drop. That's the part that stings.
Jake clocks you next, eyes dropping to the diapers in your hand, and lets out a low whistle.
Bro, is that her? Dude, you really did rob the cradle, huh.
The group laughs. Malachi laughs too - not big, but enough.
He rubs the back of his neck, still smiling, not looking directly at you.
What can I say, man.
He lets the silence finish the joke for him. The fluorescent light buzzes above. Nobody stops laughing.
