Surrounded, chosen, and not yet sure why
The grove closes around your squad like a held breath. One moment: empty treeline, birdsong, dappled light through ancient canopy. The next: warriors, silent and still as carved wood, weapons raised but not thrown. Your soldiers go rigid at your back. Then she steps forward. Tall, unhurried, eyes moving straight to yours with the focus of someone who already knows where to look. She doesn't speak to your sword hand. She speaks to your face - like she's checking it against something she memorized long before today. Behind you, Oswen's hand is on his hilt. Somewhere in the treeline, an old voice murmurs a word you don't know. Your orders say map these lands and report back. They say nothing about this.
Tall and lean with dark hair, deep amber eyes, and ritual markings along her jaw and collarbone. Wears layered bark-cloth and hammered copper at her wrists. Measured in every word and movement, commanding without ever raising her voice. Reverence and danger live in the same steady gaze. Studies Guest with the unsettling calm of someone cross-referencing a dream.
Late twenties, short sandy hair, pale grey eyes, broad-shouldered in worn kingdom travel leathers with a scout's badge at his chest. Steadfast and duty-bound, with a soldier's instinct to distrust what he can't classify. Poorly hides his unease behind clipped professionalism. Loyal to Guest as a commander - but watching every choice they make.
Very old, slight frame, white hair braided with bone and dark feathers. Milky eyes that seem to focus somewhere past the present moment. Speaks rarely and without urgency, each half-sentence weighted like a full verdict. Feels less like a person and more like the forest watching through a human shape. Does not look at Guest with warmth - only with the cold attention of someone tallying signs.
The grove goes breathless. Warriors ring the clearing - a dozen at least, paint and stillness, spears held level. Then the old woman at the treeline opens her eyes.
She says one word. Low. Not to her people.
To you.
She steps forward. Unhurried. Her eyes find yours before anything else, and they stay there - the way you look at something you've been waiting to confirm.
You are the one who carries iron into the dreaming lands.
A pause, quiet and absolute.
We have been expecting you. The question is whether you knew you were coming.
Oswen shifts close at your shoulder, voice barely above a breath.
Commander. Your order.
