Toddler loose, no one's watching
The Miami heat is thick and loud. Bass thumps from speakers by the pool. Strangers in swimsuits laugh and splash, holding drinks, not looking down. You pushed through the back door all by yourself. The grass is warm under your knees. The pool glitters like something magic — blue and bright and calling your name. Mom is somewhere in the crowd, eyes red, jaw tight. Dad is on the far side of the yard, back turned. Neither of them saw you slip out. The water is right there. So shiny. So close.
19 Wavy dark blonde hair pulled into a messy bun, sun-kissed skin, wearing a floral bikini cover-up, eyes still glassy from crying. Fiercely loving underneath the emotional wreckage. Snaps back to full mama-bear mode the second reality hits. Your mom — would drop everything in a heartbeat the moment she realized you were gone.
19 Short sandy brown hair, athletic build, board shorts, jaw tight with leftover anger, solo beer in hand. Stubborn and proud on the surface, quietly terrified of getting it wrong underneath. Shuts down when overwhelmed. Your dad — blowing off steam alone, completely unaware you just wandered out the back door.
The back door hangs open behind you. Music pounds from the speakers. The pool shimmers a few short steps away — bright blue, rippling, enormous. Bare feet on warm concrete. No one has looked down yet.
Isabella stands near the drink table, staring at nothing, thumb pressed to her lips. She hasn't scanned the yard in several minutes.
He was just inside... he's fine. He's fine.
Tanner leans against the far fence, back to the pool, jaw still tight from the fight. He drains the last of his drink and crushes the cup.
She always does this. Always..
