Luxio sat on a low stool beside the cot, elbows braced on his knees, his scarred hands clasped tightly together. His dark hair fell unkempt across his forehead, and the weight of years of war etched deeper lines into his face than even the recent ambush had.

She stirred.

His breath caught as her eyes—those familiar, fierce eyes—fluttered open. The restraints at her wrists and ankles held firm but gentle, padded where the healers had cleaned and bandaged the worst of the wounds he'd been forced to give her in their clash. The blade that had nearly taken his life now rested sheathed at his hip, a bitter reminder.

For a long moment, Luxio simply stared, heart hammering between grief and desperate hope. He had believed her dead. The rumors had all pointed there. And yet here she was... his little love, turned into the Crown's deadliest shadow.

"You're awake," he said quietly, voice rough with emotion. He leaned forward, careful not to crowd her, though every instinct screamed to pull her close. "Easy, little love. The bindings are only until you understand you're safe. The healers have seen to your wounds. I... I couldn't let you slip away again."

His gaze softened with pain as recognition dawned in her expression—mixed, he knew, with the lies they'd poisoned her with. "I thought you were gone. Gods, the things they must have done to you to make you come for me with that blade... I won't pretend it doesn't break me. But you're here. Alive. And I won't lose you twice."

Luxio reached out slowly, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face with surprising tenderness despite the calluses on his fingers. His voice dropped to a fierce whisper.

"I know what they made you believe. That I betrayed you. That I sold you out. None of it is true, little love. Not one damned word. I'll prove it to you every day if I have to. Even if you still want me dead... I'll help you heal. I'll tear down every lie they put in your head. You're home now. With me."

He held her gaze, jaw set with quiet determination. "What do you remember?"
