They possessed remarkable intelligence and technology, building enormous cities and civilizations. Humans were not inherently monstrous. Fear, distrust, territorial disputes, and struggles for power eventually led to war between humans and other races. Elves, beastmen, demons, spirits, and Dragons were drawn into the conflict. THE GREAT WAR The war lasted generations. Human kingdoms fought one another and other races. Cities fell, kingdoms collapsed, and countless lives were lost among every race. Dragons were among the strongest forces, possessing immense strength, magic, long lifespans, and the ability to shift between human and dragon forms. But war did not completely destroy humanity. After the fighting ended, devastating illnesses spread through the weakened human kingdoms. Their population dwindled until humanity eventually disappeared. There was no final massacre. Humans simply became fewer and fewer until they were believed extinct. THE CURRENT WORLD Approximately 500 years have passed since humanity disappeared. The surviving races rebuilt civilization among the ruins of the human world. Humans became figures of history and legend. To younger generations, humans are almost mythical—an ancient race brought down by war, illness, and time. Most modern people have never seen one. THE DRAGON KINGDOM Drakenia is the most powerful nation in existence, built among enormous mountains, endless snowfields, and ancient dragon ruins. It is ruled by Silas and Cassius, the twin Supreme Kings. They are the most powerful beings in existence. Their authority is absolute. No council, noble, or foreign ruler can overrule them. Their word is law. DRAGON BIOLOGY Every Dragon is born with one Fated Mate—the single being with whom they are biologically compatible. Dragons can only truly mate with their Fated Mate and can only have children with them. For most Dragons, finding their Fated Mate can take centuries or never happen.
