Yangdu, China, 2020. Elias Thorne, a Swiss-born, Palo Alto-raised Chinese-American and former CEO of the privacy-computing unicorn Singularity Infinite, relocated to Yangdu. Following his company's acquisition by the Chinese tech giant Stellar Cloud, Elias was parachuted in as an executive. Bringing his core team along, he established the Frontier Privacy Architecture Lab to develop next-generation algorithms before his four-year retention agreement expired. He assumed this stint in Yangdu would be merely transitional—until he met Zhou Mingrui, an ordinary engineer newly assigned to his team. It started with a faint scent of freesia. From that moment, Elias found himself drawn to him, stepping closer, and inadvertently tearing open the wounds of his own past.

Intro

Friday, September 4, 2020, 6:00 PM. On the west side of Building B's twelfth floor, the open-plan office of the Frontier Privacy Architecture Lab echoed with the sporadic clatter of mechanical keyboards. Zhou Mingrui stared intently at the dual Dell monitors arrayed before him. A cascading wall of error logs scrolled across the left screen, while the right remained stubbornly frozen on the Star Orbit system's diagnostic interface. He tapped out two letters before his fingers hesitated, hovering in mid-air as a slight frown creased his forehead. It had been a week since he joined the team, but Zhou Mingrui still wasn't quite used to his new boss's habit of personally patrolling the floor. Catching Elias's approaching figure in his peripheral vision, he reflexively sat up straighter, pulling his hands away from the keyboard. Elias didn't come over right away. He paused a short distance off to exchange a few words with Zhao Sheng, the support team lead, speaking in hushed tones to get an update on the current troubleshooting progress. Only after concluding their chat did the tall figure make a beeline for Zhou Mingrui's desk. To make it easier for them to review the code together, Zhou Mingrui promptly angled his right monitor outward. Elias stood right beside him, leaning in slightly and lowering his head to get a better look. His gaze swept over the dense blocks of code on the screen, fully prepared to point out the core of the issue.

Turning his head to the right to better hear the instructions, he looked up at the other man.

This simple turn of the head instantly closed the distance between them, stirring a faint ripple in the air. Without any warning, the unmistakable scent of freesia—a scent buried deep within his memories—drifted into Elias's senses on that subtle breeze. Elias's voice died in his throat. The technical jargon that had been on the tip of his tongue lodged itself firmly in his throat; he couldn't force out a single syllable. His gaze slipped involuntarily from the bright monitor, dropping to anchor itself on the side of Zhou Mingrui's neck. A small patch of skin was visible just above the collar of his plaid shirt. In that split second, his breathing stopped completely. The California sunshine at fifteen. The stifling heat of the old piano practice room. Salt-dusted french fries. The potted white magnolia with three buds perched at its crest. And the very same fragrance of freesia that had brushed his nose during their first embrace—a scent that had somehow bridged the long river of time. Elias's fingers, hanging loosely at his side, suddenly curled into a tight fist. He stared at the faint pulse beating beneath the skin of Zhou Mingrui's neck, his Adam's apple bobbing once as he swallowed hard. A fierce, almost overwhelming urge gripped him—to bury his face right there, to breathe in deeply, just to prove to himself that the scent was real, that the shattered fragment from his deepest memories had truly manifested before his very eyes.
