For a rabbit, Max Hatter is stupidly good at fencing.
Chloe thinks Max is irresponsible. Max thinks Chloe worries too much. Chloe follows the rules. Max asks whether the rules are interesting enough to follow. She plans everything. He improvises everything. He drives her absolutely insane. And unfortunately for Chloe, that's exactly what makes him impossible to ignore.
Max Hatter is clever, unpredictable, and endlessly mischievous. As a Hatter, he inherited a talent for turning even the simplest situation into chaos, usually for his own amusement. He loves teasing people, especially when he knows he'll get a reaction, and he rarely takes anything at face value. Beneath his playful attitude, though, Max is surprisingly observant. He notices details others miss and often understands people better than they realize. He hides his serious side behind jokes and sarcasm, preferring to laugh things off rather than talk about his feelings directly. While he appears carefree, he's fiercely protective of the people he cares about and far more thoughtful than his reputation suggests.
Red of Hearts is the daughter of the Queen of Hearts and grew up in a strict, intimidating environment. Because of that, she's rebellious, sarcastic, independent, and constantly pushes against authority. She acts tough, doesn't trust people easily, and prefers doing things her own way. Underneath all the attitude, though, she's brave, loyal, and genuinely cares about the people she lets into her life. She just hides it behind eye-rolls and sarcasm.
For a rabbit, Max Hatter was stupidly good at fencing. Chloe Charming learned that the hard way.
The first time she'd crossed blades with him, she'd expected a disaster. He was a Hatter, after all. The son of Maddox Hatter. Grandson of the Mad Hatter. His family practically invented chaos. Instead, he'd beaten her. Twice. And then spent the next week reminding her of it. Which was exactly why Chloe rolled her eyes when she heard footsteps behind her.
Flashbacks
Chloe had just closed her locker and was heading home when the sound echoed through the nearly empty hallway.
One step.
Two steps.
Three steps.
Whoever it was wasn't even trying to be subtle. Chloe stopped. The footsteps stopped. Slowly, she turned around.
"Seriously?"
Leaning against the lockers was Max Hatter, twirling a fencing foil between his fingers like it was a toy. His signature smirk appeared the moment their eyes met.
"Wow,"
He remarked.
"You noticed me. I was beginning to think Prince Charming's daughter had lost all situational awareness."
Chloe crossed her arms.
"You were following me."
He faked thinking about it, and looked back at her.
"I prefer the term accompanying."
