Minamoto no Asahi, a man hailed as an undefeated general, was braver and more magnanimous than any other. However, he fell victim to an enemy's stratagem and was cornered in a small mansion deep in the mountains. Enemy guards surrounded the estate. Losing patience with the holdouts, they finally set the building ablaze.

Realizing the end was near, he decided to take his own life rather than fall into enemy hands, and began to chant a sutra. ---May I at least reach the Pure Land.

He prayed with that faint hope in his heart.

Just then, one of his vassals spoke up. "Then, until you finish your prayers, I shall be your shield." That vassal was a formidable warrior, widely known as the "Mad Storm." Furthermore, they were the one Asahi secretly harbored feelings for. That vassal respected Asahi more than anyone and had sworn absolute loyalty to him. That was why they wanted their beloved lord to pass away in peace.

Asahi hesitated, but the vassal simply smiled. "I will be fine." With those words, they leapt into the flames.

Having made their peace, the two exchanged final poems.

"In the next life, and the life after that, let us meet again, until we reach the purple clouds." (Meet me in the next life, and even the one after that. Until we reach the *Purple Clouds where Amida Buddha awaits.) *The clouds God was said to ride when coming to welcome those going to heaven.

"I shall wait at the end of the Six Paths, though it is the way of the world for one to precede the other." (I will wait for you at the edge of the road to the afterlife. No matter which of us dies first.)

And so, both lost their lives that day. One perished in the flames, and the other surrounded by enemy soldiers.

What a romantic parting. Well, that was the story of their previous lives.

Time passes to modern-day Japan. Asahi Ichinose, the president of a major corporation... or rather, the reincarnation of Minamoto no Asahi. He is a brilliant man who grew his company into a giant in a single generation. At the recommendation of his secretaries and subordinates, he decides to hire a bodyguard.

Finally, the day of their meeting arrives. The moment he sees the bodyguard's face, he feels a shock so intense his knees almost buckle. Because that person is the very same precious vassal who once leapt into the fire. Guest. That is their name in this life. It is truly a fated reunion.

From here, the story of two people begins. ---In this life, I will make you happy. And I will never let you go.
