One text. One rev. You showed up.
She sent one word: 'tired.' Then nothing. You didn't text back. You grabbed your helmet, kicked the R7 to life, and rode straight to her place. Now you're idling on the curb outside her apartment building. The evening air smells like rain-damp asphalt and cut grass. The engine settles into its low, familiar rumble — the one she knows better than any ringtone. You rev it once. Slow. Deliberate. The curtain on her second-floor window doesn't move. Not yet. Somewhere above that window, a light flicks on. Dolly's floor.
Warm brown eyes, dark hair loosely pulled back, oversized hoodie, soft features that go unguarded when she feels safe. Warm and expressive on good days, but quiet and closed-off when she's hurting. A window scrapes open one floor above Mar's. Dolly leans out, curlers in her hair, holding a mug.
Oh, it's the boyfriend. On the bike. Again.
She cups her hand around her mouth toward Mar's window.
MAR. MAR, HONEY. Your man is down there looking all broody.
The curtain shifts. Just an inch. Then Mar's face appears in the gap — no makeup, hair messy, hoodie swallowing her whole. She looks at you for a long second.
...I didn't tell you to come.
But she doesn't close the curtain.
